3 Tips To Select a Name For Your New Business

I always see lots of “serious” articles about how to select a name for your new business. And I laugh because, while picking a good name for your business is important, I don’t think it’s that hard.

I’m gonna share two super-simple tips with you, plus one article that has a bunch of tips you might find helpful when choosing a name.

Food, Friends, & Wine

This right here is the best way I know to pick a name for your business; it’s how I came up with WeMontage. And it’s super-easy.

Invite a bunch of friends over and tell them you want them to help you brainstorm names for your new business, and bribe them with food and drink.

Here’s the most important-and fun-part: serve delicious wine! If you like white wine, pick up a few bottles of this 2013 Viognier and chill them. You and your friends will thank me.

Sleep On It

Once the libations are poured and people’s creative juices get flowin’, I have no doubt you will have at least two solid name options for your new biz.

All you gotta do next is sleep on the names, and sleep off the wine! Then pick the one you like best the next day.

That’s it. Simple.

More Traditional Tips For Picking a Name

Here’s an article that takes a more traditional approach to selecting a name for your new biz. Some of the suggestions are as follows:

  • Use compound words. Like Facebook, SendGrid, and WeMontage. 🙂
  • Use a portmanteau (join both the sounds and meanings of two words). Like Pinterest.
  • Misspell a word. Like Tumblr.

There are other good suggestions in the article, so head on over and take a look.

Finally, make sure your new name is available across all social media channels. This site will quickly help you do that.

How did you come up with a name when you were starting your business?
